A couple of months back, in my Who’s visiting me post, I looked at how I could track visitors to my site. Since then, I’ve been keeping an eye on where my traffic comes from, and it’s proved that nothing is as important as getting involved with individuals who already get a lot of traffic.
I’m currently enjoying following Problogger’s 31 Days to build a better blog and whilst I’ve not carried out every task, I have taken part in some. One of these was to write a list post, for which I wrote a pretty basic post called 5 most annoying colleague questions. Having commented about it on the Problogger site, this then was linked to on MyMarketer.net in an enormous post ‘The Mother of all lists’. It’s an impressive list, and somehow my post ended up being the first link in one of the first categories.
Since that day I’ve seen a huge number of visits all from that one link – in fact over 70% of all my traffic over the past two weeks has been linked from there!
Now personally, I am not looking for traffic in particular – blogging is just an occasional hobby to me, but there are many bloggers out there who take it very seriously, and indeed many who are looking to make money doing it, and for them traffic is king!
So what have I learned? Well, the concept of links from other blogs driving traffic to you is just as true now as it was back in the early days of blogging. But what else? Well, luck plays a serious part in it too – if you happen to be mentioned in the right place, you will get traffic.
Of course once you get the traffic, keeping it becomes the most important things, for that you need good content! There’s a subject on which I’m a true beginner!
