To my mind, the greatest change in the way the software and web world actually works has been the development of apps/gadgets/plugins etc, call them what you will.
The concept is simple – a developer creating a service, be it a web site, a mobile phone or whatever, will only create a certain number of features, and may then work to create new features one at a time. www.google.com, www.bbc.co.uk… Ask somebody twenty years ago what these pieces of information meant, and nobody would have had a clue. Ten years ago, maybe 35% might have known, but today nearly everybody knows these are addresses of websites, or for the geeky amongst us the URL (Uniform Resource Locator).
Every website has a URL and if you have set up a blog (as discussed in my last post) this will be something along the lines of myblog.wordpress.com. As I mentioned in my last post, I have now moved my blog to my own web hosting, and one of the advantages is that the URL is simply www.mrben1.co.uk, using my own domain name rather than wordpress.com.
